COOLANT FLUSH

 
Your cooling system is what keeps your car from overheating. It works by circulating a mixture of water and coolant through the engine to flush out contaminants. Most mechanics recommend a routine flush every 65,000 km, or you can check your vehicle owner's manual for recommended timeframes.  If you run out of coolant, and continue to operate the engine for a significant period of time, it will cause serious harm to the engine. Among the first things damaged is typically the heads and head gaskets. If you really push it, you could damage the block, seize the engine, or melt a hole in a piston.

A coolant flush is not the same as a drain and refill.  A drain and refill generally only includes draining the radiator and reservoir then refilling it with new fluid.  A coolant flush pushes anti-freeze through your cooling system in order to do a complete cleanse by clearing out all of the old anti-freeze and any contaminants that may have built up.

Furthermore, coolant can become more acidic over time and lose its rust-inhibiting properties, causing corrosion. Corrosion can cause damage to the radiator, water pump, thermostat, radiator cap, hoses and other parts of the cooling system, as well as to the vehicle heater system - and all of that can cause a car engine to overheat!
