Air filters might seem like small parts of your car, but they’re important for both your health and that of your vehicle. These are some of the reasons why air filters are important — and why you should consistently change them.
What Are Air Filters?
An air filter is what stands between you or your engine and some pretty yucky things in the air. There are two different types of air filters at work inside your vehicle:
Cabin Air Filters
Cabin air filters catch the dust, pollen, and other airborne material that comes through the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system.
Unwanted airborne materials can make a car ride difficult, especially if you have allergies or respiratory problems.
The cabin filter is typically found behind the glove box or under the dashboard.
Engine Air Filters
When dust particles and other grime try to enter your engine, your car’s engine air filter stops them, helping to keep things in good working order.
You should regularly replace this engine air filter to ensure that your engine can continue performing efficiently.
When Should I Change My Air Filters?
Your air filter should be changed relatively frequently, but the recommended time frame depends on your car’s manufacturer’s guidelines:
INFINITI recommends changing your cabin air filter every 24,000 km and your engine air filter every 48,000 km.
In urban areas like Toronto, this recommendation is sometimes closer to every year, depending on your car’s air quality.
